In the hourglass, the falling sand – the finitude of life – becomes immediately “past”, but the “present” continues to be reflected in the two round mirrors beside the marble plate. The hourglass measures the time span of 8 hours.
The hourglass was inspired by the fact that archaeologists use sieves on excavation sites.
On the Feti archaeological site, brass objects, ashes mixed with shards of ceramics and animal bones of cattle and wild antelopes
were found, materials lost in time.
Thus, the hourglass represents the simulta-
neous act of “stirring” the past and relating
it to the present.
A Brief History of Time is the title of a famous science-book on cosmology by British author Stephen Hawking.
Assim, a ampulheta representa o acto simul-
